November 11 – 19, 2010 This team will partner with the Vreedenhoop Church to minister to children in the Plastic City community. We will read books, tutor them, and bring smiles to their faces. The team will also host a workshop for church volunteers, offering creative ways to teach children basic educational skills. In addition, we will spend time with the staff and children at Ruimveldt Children’s Home & Care Centre. The team is open to adults age 18 and up. The approximate cost is $2200. All team members will be required to attend a half day training and once a month meetings prior to the trip. Deadline for application and $100 non refundable deposit is September 17. This testimony is from Ethan and Blake, two brothers that served on one of the Guatemala teams this summer. "Where to start? Well, Guatemala was a wonderful and unforgettable experience for us. There are so many opportunities to help the people of Guatemala and make a huge difference in their lives. Their response to the activities and projects that we coordinated and worked with them on was always one of extreme joy and appreciation. As a whole, it seems that they want to improve life for their kids. And what is abundantly clear is that God's way is the only way to that improvement. Another amazing part of the trip was the friendships we made both on and off the team. On the team we were able to connect with like-minded followers of Jesus that we may not have had the chance to meet otherwise. And the friendships made with the Guatemalans are a real opportunity to form a bridge that can help enrich both economically and more importantly, spiritually the lives of those we met.

It was the end of January when God surprised my husband Justin and I. In the midst of the tragedy in Haiti we were standing in an Orlando airport watching Haitian orphans slowly being released one at a time to families some of whom had waited for four years to bring their children home. It was one of the most emotional scenes I have ever witnessed. It had been almost two years since Will, the 3 year old little boy we were adopting, had become part of our lives and we were anticipating another year or two before we would actually bring him home. But there we were standing in the airport waiting to bring our son home to South Carolina. It was a few weeks later, while caught in the rush of a crazy morning, that I saw a valentine Will had made in Sunday School the past week. It said "I love my family- Love Will” I knew this was one for the fridge so I found a spot of the door for this paper card, that held so much meaning to me. Great new resource for families! Many of you have been helped by Dr. Karyn Purvis' book, The Connected Child. Perhaps you were able to attend one of her conferences that Caroline's Promise helped to bring to the Triad. We are excited about her latest resource, "Created to Connect: A Christian's Guide to The Connected Child." Dr. Purvis and Michael & Amy Monroe developed this study guide to help illuminate the biblical principles that serve as the foundation for the philosophy and interventions detailed in The Connected Child.
