Say Yes to Sponsoring

Our next sponsorship story is from Melissa Brown!

Sponsoring surprised me...in good ways. I started sponsoring a teen through Caroline's Promise in April 2016. Over the years, I had sponsored kids through other organizations and had low expectations going in. That all changed quickly. I got to pack a gallon size bag & write a letter to my sponsor girl, Claudia. She was getting a real present picked out by me, well a lot of little ones, not a generic present I tacked on money for one month. As I have gotten to know her, I love putting presents in the bag throughout the year as I buy something she would like.

I was surprised one day with a picture taken during a trip to Guatemala from Lisa Holbrook, the Director of Caroline's Promise. It was of Claudia!!

Throughout my time sponsoring Claudia, I have had the chance to celebrate her Quincenera by sending a letter and present, get great letters and artwork from her, and make sure that she was able to attend a leadership camp.

I love being part of her life and that she has welcomed me into it. All for just $040 a month, the willingness to say yes - to sponsoring, writing letters, and sending presents. While Claudia is an amazing young woman, I would be another faceless/nameless sponsor if I did not care for her beyond the $40. The money is easy at this point, it automatically happens each month. The hard part is making sure to write a letter een when I do not always know what to write. It was hard to pick out presents and have no clue if she would like them. Pushing through the uncomfortableness has brought me so much joy. We get to be in each other's lives all because I said yes and keep saying yes to sponsoring.

Mission team member's "idea" + Facebook Fundraiser = Jobs in San Nicolas

Our last team to Guatemala was in November of 2019.  That seems impossible but it's true.   The primary focus of the team was a pediatric medical clinic that was hugely successful.  However, that wasn't the only seed that was planted that week in the community of San Nicolas.   Wanda King has been going to Guatemala with Caroline's Promise for years.  We can always count on her to bring hand sanitizer, goodie bags that she and her sister make for everyone, and lots of love!  One of the things I love most about Wanda is that she is willing to step in and do anything that is asked of her.  A few weeks before this trip she asked if she could bring a set of hair cutting supplies.  I didn't know if there was a need, but I knew that Wanda felt strongly that she should bring them and so I said "of course!"  Little did we know the impact that one idea would make.   Wanda spent most of that week teaching our partner, Monica how to cut hair.  We quickly realized that
